What is Natural Borneol (d-Borneol)?
Natural borneol — also called natural camphor or right-handed borneol — is a bicyclic monoterpene alcohol (C10H18O) extracted from the fresh leaf and young branch of the dragon-brain camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora var. borneol, 龙脑樟). Chemically it is the (+)-enantiomer, or d-borneol, with a specific rotation of +34° to +38°. It appears as white to off-white crystals with a cool, penetrating camphoraceous odour and melts at 204-209°C. Unlike isolated single molecules from a reactor, natural borneol carries a complex trace terpene profile from the living plant, which is part of why buyers who formulate premium natural products specifically request the natural form.
Natural vs Synthetic: why purity and authenticity matter
The market contains three very different 'borneols' that must not be confused. Natural borneol (d-borneol, from 龙脑樟) is the premium, plant-derived form. Isoborneol (from Artemisia / Blumea, 'Ai-pian') is the left-handed form. Synthetic borneol is racemic dl-borneol made from turpentine and costs roughly one-twentieth of the natural price. Because synthetic is cheap, adulteration is common. Professional buyers verify authenticity with GC/HPLC: natural d-borneol should test ≥ 96.0% (Chinese Pharmacopoeia) or 99%+ (pharma grade), camphor must be ≤ 3.0%, and isoborneol must be absent. A COA that cannot show these three numbers is a red flag. We supply only verified natural d-borneol and provide batch-specific chromatograms on request.
How natural borneol is produced
Production follows a traditional-but-controlled route: fresh 龙脑樟 leaf and young branch are steam-distilled to recover the volatile oil, then the borneol-rich fraction is purified by recrystallization into white crystals. The dragon-brain camphor tree takes 8-10 years to reach productive maturity and strict ecological harvesting quotas limit annual yield, which is why global natural borneol output stays in the low hundreds of tonnes per year. Our sourcing bases in Jishui (Jiangxi, ~60,000 mu plantation) and Xinhuang (Hunan, ~28,000 mu, national geographic indication) secure a stable, traceable supply of raw material.
Applications across pharmaceutical, cosmetic and flavor
Natural borneol is remarkably versatile. In pharmaceuticals it is a key component of 300+ traditional Chinese medicine formulas (such as heart and topical plasters) and acts as a transdermal penetration enhancer, improving the skin absorption of co-formulated actives. In cosmetics it delivers a natural cooling, soothing and anti-inflammatory effect for creams, serums and masks. In oral care and flavor it is a premium natural cooling agent. The 'natural' claim is rising fast — natural-ingredient adoption in cosmetics grew from ~11% to ~29% in recent years — which strengthens the case for specifying natural rather than synthetic borneol.
Quality, compliance and what to confirm before export
For pharmaceutical use, confirm pharmaceutical (or food) GMP status — a veterinary or cosmetic-only GMP is not sufficient for human supplements. For halal / kosher markets, request the relevant certificates. Every batch should ship with a COA documenting d-borneol content, camphor ≤ 3%, isoborneol not detected, heavy metals (Pb, Cd, As, Hg), microbiology (total count ≤ 100 CFU/g) and residual solvent. US buyers may require FDA facility registration / cGMP Part 111 and Prop 65 heavy-metal data; EU buyers should confirm compliance with relevant food / cosmetic regulations. We prepare these documents per destination market and review them during RFQ.

Sourcing Story
From harvest to your formulation

Jiangxi (Jishui) / Hunan (Xinhuang), China
GreenSource™ Verified Origin
Natural borneol is steam-distilled from the fresh leaf and young branch of the dragon-brain camphor tree (龙脑樟), a rare endemic camphor variety first discovered in Xinhuang, Hunan in 1988. Our GreenSource™ program sources from Jishui (Jiangxi) and Xinhuang (Hunan) geographic-indication bases — the only regions with nationally protected dragon-brain camphor germplasm — ensuring every batch is traceable to its harvest region, tested by GC/HPLC for d-borneol confirmation, and sourced through cooperatives that support local farming communities.
